- Ph.D. students must complete a qualifying exam consisting of an original research project.
- It is expected that the written component of the qualifying exam will be of publishable quality.
- Students must form their qualifying exam committee by the end of the second year and complete their exam by the end of the third year.
- Soon after forming the qualifying exam committee, the student must develop a proposal for the qualifying exam.
- This proposal must be approved by the entire qualifying exam committee before the student progresses with the written exam.
- An oral defense, open to all faculty members, is required.
- The written exam and the oral defense will be evaluated as a combined effort.
