Senior Lecturer Molly Block received a Career Connection Fellowship for the Fall 2023 semester.
Dr. Block also accepted the appointment as the 4+1 Pathway Program Coordinator for the department. The CJUS 4+1 Pathway Program began in 2021 and has grown to eighteen students this year; including four students moving to the graduate program next year and one graduating from the program with a masters.
Associate Professor Jon Brauer and Dr. Jacob Day (UNC-Wilmington) launched a website called The Reluctant Criminologist to share their open-access course materials and musings about scientific theory and methods.
Assistant Professor Fiona Chan was selected as a recipient of the 2024 Trustee Teaching Award. The award honors faculty who had a positive impact on student learning, especially undergraduates. Dr. Chan taught CJUS-P290 The Nature of Inquiry and CJUS-P493 Financial Crimes in the 2023-2024 academic year. The Trustees Teaching Awards are given each spring to honor outstanding teaching during the prior calendar year.
Assistant Professor Bonnie Ernst released Challenging Confinement: Mass Incarceration and the Fight for Equality in Women’s Prisons in October 2023. The book examines how the feminist movements in the late twentieth century ignited prison protests, activism, and reform in women’s prisons. While the late twentieth century brought about greater rights for women, it also saw a rapid increase in the number of female prisoners. Before their confinement, many incarcerated women had gained access to work and higher education. But once behind bars, they found the only programs available for them perpetuated misogynistic norms. The book, published by NYU Press, was celebrated at the 2023 College Faculty Book Party.
Assistant Professor Tri Keah Henry was honored at the Evening of Celebrations with the Trustee Teaching Award for 2023. The award honors faculty who had a positive impact on student learning, especially undergraduates. The Trustees Teaching Awards are given each spring to honor outstanding teaching during the prior calendar year.
Dr. Henry was also selected among a group of IU women faculty to attend The Faculty Women of Color in the Academy Conference April 11-14, 2024, in Arlington, Virginia. The “conference is a unique educational and professional opportunity for indigenous and women of color in higher education to network, engage, and learn with colleagues from around the country.”
Dr. Henry was selected to participate in the Racial Democracy, Crime and Justice Network’s Summer Research Institute (SRI) in July. Participants complete an ongoing project (either a research paper or grant proposal) in preparation for journal submission or agency funding review.
Additionally, Dr. Henry was also selected as a recipient of the Center for Justice Research (CJR) Hidden Curriculum Fellowship. Fellows receive quarterly instructor-led interactive sessions based on the researcher development framework along with support, educational resources, and networking with expert researchers in justice-related fields. Dr. Henry will attend the CJR Summit in June.
Professor Natalie Hipple was promoted to Professor in July 2023. Dr. Hipple studies the collaborative methods used by police departments to identify and reduce crime and disorder especially as they relate to gun violence and homelessness. Her other research interests include incident reviews, higher education policing, and evaluation of criminal justice programs. Dr. Hipple serves as the Department Chair.
Professor Arvind Verma has been invited to participate in a Mid-Career Training Program for senior police officers in India. He will attend two week-long programs in 2024 to engage with the officers. The program is administered by the Indian Institute of Public Administration-Delhi.
Dr. Verma joined Drs. Ishan Ashutosh and Sumit Ganguly in a panel and public discussion about the prospects for the 2024 Indian elections on April 17, 2024. The panel was hosted by the Hamilton Lugar School of Global and International Studies Dhar India Studies Program.
Senior Adjunct Lecturer Todd Burkhardt was one of several collaborators for IU’s Veteran Trauma and Transparency Program. This is a 4-part series to increase knowledge of military culture and experiences and to improve the quality of care for veterans across Indiana by educating students, faculty, and staff.
Senior Undergraduate Advisor Krystie Herndon received the 2023 NACADA Outstanding Advising Award: Primary Advising category. The National Academic Advising Association is an international association with 12,000 professional advisors, counselors, faculty, administrators, and students working to enhance the educational development of students.
Additionally, Dr. Herndon was promoted to the rank of Senior Academic Advisor - Expert and celebrated 35 years with Indiana University!
Krystie also joined as a community member singer with the IU African American Choral Ensemble at an event in the School of Education to celebrate Black History Month.
