Todd Burkhardt is the Director of Campus Partnerships for Indiana University’s Center for Rural Engagement (CRE) at Indiana University-Bloomington, facilitating work with faculty, staff, and students that connects resources through collaboration with community partners to improve wellbeing in rural Indiana. Todd is a human rights philosopher and as adjunct Senior Lecturer in the Department of Criminal Justice teaches international humanitarian law. In 2023, his book entitled, Just War and Human Rights, SUNY Press was selected for international recognition through Knowledge Unlatched.
Todd is the co-creator of CAV (Creative Arts for Vets) which is a CRE initiative that spans the country assisting veterans with methodologies for improving emotional, psychological, and social well-being. In conjunction with the School of Social Work and the Interprofessional Practice Education and Center, Todd co-designed and co-teaches the Veteran Trauma and Transparency certificate series which is taught at both IU-Bloomington and IU-Indy. This certificate series is to better prepare future professionals who will work with veterans as service providers. Todd served over 27 years in the active-duty Army as an enlisted tank crewman and infantry officer.
Research interests: war crimes, drones, moral injury, veteran trauma and suicide.
